This is a presentation that gives you a chance to discuss your opinions and ideas about the many thought-provoking issues we've explored in this class!
It is a GRADED PRESENTATION. That means it still must show evidence of preparation (i.e., don't just wing it) and PROFESSIONALISM (i.e., don't show up wearing what you slept in).
Feel free to use your blog as a visual aid. Feel free to draw on your Final Post (but do not read it to the class). Feel free to talk about ANY issues we explored during the course, not just your final post.
Just come ready to share your thoughts and ideas. I'll bring refreshments.
OPTION #1
Talk about your relationship with technology, using your final blog post as a jumping-off point. Tell us about the role of media in your life. Tell us about your so-called "digital footprint." How exposed online are you? Did you find anything in your online presence that needed editing?
BE RESPONSIVE TO THE FINAL POST PROMPT. Do not just ramble about apps you like to use.
What about the short videos in the Final Post prompt? Was the optimistic one about the wonders of technology more accurate — or the one about the dark side, like loneliness and FOMO? Or does the truth lie somewhere in between? How do you see the balance — and how to strike that balance?
What about the videos about Artificial Intelligence and online privacy? What about online censorship? How do you think some of the issues we've discussed this semester will play out in the future?
OPTION #2
Take a look at some of the thought-provoking questions below. Some of them might resonate with you, especially since you've created a blog that is live online. Think about it: You have gone from being a content consumer to be a content creator. You are not just part of the audience for the media — you are part of the media.
- How did the World Wide Web in general change the world of mass communication?
- How did the personal blogging platform — and then Facebook and Twitter — change the world of mass communication?
- In what ways does blogging and social media challenge the hegemony of the so-called Mainstream Media? (First of all, what is hegemony?)
- In what ways did blogging and social media platforms act as so-called “disruptive technologies?” Disrupt what? How?
- In what ways did blogging and social media act as tools for empowerment? Empower whom? To what ends?
- In what ways do blogging and social media advance First Amendment imperatives and what we have dubbed Values of Free Expression? How so?
- What do you think Martin Luther King would have done if blogging and social media had been around in the 1960s?
- How do blogging and social media hold potential to advance social movements and political mobilizations like the Civil Rights Movement?
- On a more personal level, what were the things you found hardest about keeping up a blog this semester?
- What were the things you found enjoyable about keeping up a blog this semester?
- What are some things you would recommend to future students about keeping up a blog throughout the semester?
